Its geologic history is marked by a series of fragmentations: the first occurred around 150 million years ago (Ma), followed by a second at 126 Ma, and a final separation at 83 Ma. Flora and Fauna

Native flowering plants are extremely rare; only two species exist, including Deschampsia antarctica and the Antarctic pearlwort. The surrounding Southern Ocean is a rich habitat for whales and other marine mammals, protected in part by the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
