KXOK-LD: A History of the Oklahoma Low-Power Television Station

The landscape of local broadcasting is often shaped by small, dedicated stations that serve specific communities. KXOK-LD is a prime example of such a station, evolving through various ownerships and technical transitions since its inception in the mid-1990s. From its early days as a community-focused outlet to its role within a larger network, the station's journey reflects the shifting nature of low-power television (LPTV).

Founding and Early Years

The station began its operations on November 21, 1994, under the call sign K32DZ. It was established by Media Manics Incorporated of Enid and was initially managed by Charles D. Pearson. For several years, the station operated under this identity before transitioning to the call sign KXOK-LP on November 23, 2001.

By 2002, management shifted to Rex Faulkner. During this era, the station utilized a dual-distribution method, airing on UHF channel 32 and cable channel 18. To expand its local presence, the station established a new studio within the Oakwood Mall, which served as the hub for producing local newscasts and hosting auctions.

Ownership Transitions and Legal Challenges

Ownership of the station was officially transferred to Rex Faulkner on January 22, 2004. However, this period was marked by legal volatility. In 2004, the station entered a legal battle with the University Network, filing a lawsuit for breach of contract. In response, the University Network filed a countersuit alleging copyright infringement. This conflict occurred while the station was broadcasting programming featuring Dr. Gene Scott, which had been on air since November 2002.

Following the death of Rex Faulkner in 2005, the station was managed by Dixie Meyer, the executrix of his estate. This interim management lasted until 2007, when the station was sold to ME3 Communications.

The Evolution into TVOK Network

Under the ownership of ME3 Communications, the station continued to evolve. On July 8, 2009, the call sign was updated to KXOK-LD, where "LD" signifies a digital low-power station. In 2011, ME3 Communications merged with Oklahoma Broadcast Associates to form TVOK Network LLC.

Throughout the tenure of both ME3 Communications and TVOK Network, the station was managed by Jack Mills. As part of the TVOK Network, KXOK-LD became a sister station to KTEW-LD in Ponca City, frequently rebroadcasting KTEW's Retro TV-affiliated content.
