The History of Cairu

Long before European arrival, the region was inhabited by the Aimoré people. The Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century, quickly establishing sugarcane plantations. The settlement was formally founded in 1608 as the Vila de Nossa Senhora do Rosário do Cairú by Francisco Romeo, the administrator of the Captaincy of São Jorge dos Ilhéus, who was drawn to the area's mild climate.

Strategically positioned on an elevation overlooking the Tinharé Channel—the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean—Cairu flourished as a center for timber and manioc flour production during the 17th century. The town's wealth was significant enough that for thirty years, it was required to contribute 166$000 annually to help rebuild Lisbon following the devastating earthquake of 1755.

By 1911, the municipality was organized into five districts: Cairu (the seat), Galeão, Gamboa, Morro de São Paulo, and Velha Boipeba. It officially achieved city status in 1938.
