During the height of World War II, the United States developed a specialized fleet of gliders to transport troops and heavy equipment silently into hostile territory. Initial goals were set for 1,000 pilots to operate 1,000 gliders (split evenly between eight-seat and fifteen-seat models), but by June 1942, the requirement for pilots surged to 6,000. Following Barringer's disappearance at sea in January 1943, Richard C. du Pont took over the program's direction.

Operational Deployment and the Waco CG-4A

The Waco CG-4A became the most widely utilized glider of the war. Constructed from a metal and wood frame covered in fabric, it was operated by a crew of two. It featured a normal cargo capacity of 3,710 lb, which allowed it to transport either 13 combat-equipped troops, a jeep, or a small artillery piece.

The CG-4A saw extensive action across multiple theaters, including:

The final glider mission of the war took place at Luzon on June 23, 1945.

Post-war, the U.S. maintained only one glider regiment. After some exercises in 1949, glider operations were officially removed from Army capabilities on January 1, 1953. Today, the U.S. Air Force Academy still uses sailplanes to teach cadets the fundamentals of flight.

Navy and Marine Corps Amphibious Experiments

Parallel to the Army's efforts, the U.S. Navy explored the concept of amphibious gliders—aircraft with flying-boat hulls that could land on water. Proposed by officer Marc Mitscher in April 1941, the goal was to deliver an entire Marine Corps brigade of 715 men to beachheads, towed by Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina amphibians.

The Bureau of Aeronautics specified two types: a single-hulled version for 12 passengers and a twin-hulled version for 24. While the Allied Aviation Corporation (XLRA-1) and Bristol Aeronautical Corporation (XLRQ-1) produced single-hulled prototypes that flew in early 1943, the Navy and Marine Corps concluded the concept was impractical. The program was terminated on September 27, 1943, though prototypes were tested until December 1943, possibly for glider bomb development.

The Marine Corps also operated a training unit at Parris Island using Pratt-Read LNE-1 and Schweizer LNS-1 gliders, and evaluated 15 Army Waco CG-4As (designated as LRW-1). However, none of these Navy or Marine Corps initiatives reached operational status.
