Early Steps into Management
Following his retirement as a professional player, Kovalets entered the coaching world under the mentorship of Myron Markevych. In 2005, Markevych invited him to join the staff at Metalist Kharkiv, where Kovalets served as an assistant coach, gaining foundational experience in tactical preparation and squad management.

Head Coaching Challenges in Ukraine
In 2008, Kovalets stepped into his first head coaching role with FC Lviv. The club had recently been promoted to the Ukrainian Premier League, but the tenure proved difficult. Despite his efforts, the team struggled with an unsuccessful start to the season. Ultimately, FC Lviv failed to maintain its top-flight status, suffering relegation after losing to Illichivets on goal difference.
Transition to PFC Oleksandria and Obolon
Seeking a fresh start, Kovalets joined PFC Oleksandria in the Ukrainian First League—the second tier of Ukrainian professional football—at the end of August 2009. His time there was relatively brief, as an opportunity arose during the winter break of the 2009–10 Ukrainian Premier League season. He was appointed as the manager of Obolon following the departure of Yuriy Maksymov.
However, his tenure at Obolon was short-lived. Following a 1–0 defeat against Chornomorets Odesa on November 31, Kovalets was sacked from his position.
International Experience
Expanding his horizons beyond the Ukrainian league system, Kovalets moved into international management. On January 18, 2012, he was appointed as the new manager of 1. FC Tatran Prešov, bringing his experience to a new competitive environment.
