History and Foundation
The creation of ESA Business School was the result of a collaborative vision to strengthen educational ties between France and Lebanon. The initiative was driven by Professor Fayek Abillama, president of the HEC Alumni Association chapter in Lebanon, in cooperation with the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In early 1995, Jean-Pierre Lafon, the former French Ambassador to Lebanon, advocated for enhanced cooperation in training and education. This led to a formal partnership involving the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bank of Lebanon, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris. The school was officially inaugurated on April 5, 1996, in a ceremony attended by French President Jacques Chirac and Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri.
The Campus: From Hospital to Higher Education
The ESA campus is situated on a site with a deep historical legacy. During the Ottoman Empire starting in 1860, German missions established the site as an orphanage and hospital, managed by the deaconesses of Kaiserswerth under the Order of St. John (Johanniterorden) of Jerusalem.
Inaugurated on March 10, 1862, the Saint John Hospital was a vital healthcare hub, treating between 9,000 and 12,000 patients annually, peaking at approximately 14,000 in 1893. The site later served as a chancellery, but following the assassination of French Ambassador Louis Delamare in 1981, the embassy was moved and the site eventually abandoned.
To prepare the land for the business school in 1995, military demining operations were conducted. Following extensive rehabilitation work, the site was reopened and inaugurated as the ESA campus in 1996.
