The unrest was triggered by the detention of three students on extortion charges; these detainees were reportedly linked to a case originally filed at the Uttara East Police Station.
The protest, led by the Students Against Discrimination platform, involved protesters hurling bricks at the station in an attempt to secure the release of the students. To defuse the situation, police held meetings with student representatives. Following the incident, the police officer responsible for the detentions was closed.
