Football: Over a Century of Gridiron Tradition
The Lopers football program began in 1905, initially competing against local high schools. While the first season resulted in a 0-5-1 record, the team achieved its first winning season in 1911 with a 5-3 finish. After a brief hiatus in 1943 and 1944, the program grew in prominence, making its postseason debut in 1955 at the Botany Bowl with a 34-13 victory over Northern State.
The program has a storied history of postseason play, including four NAIA playoff appearances (1963, 1977, 1979, 1980) and five NCAA Playoff appearances (2002, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2021). Additionally, the Lopers secured a 50-33 win over Winona State in the final Mineral Water Bowl. The team is currently led by head coach Ryan Held.
Wrestling: The Gold Standard
Wrestling stands as the most decorated program at UNK, having secured all of the university's NCAA Division II titles. Former head coach and current Athletic Director Marc Bauer led the team to three national titles in 2008, 2012, and 2013. During his tenure, Bauer mentored 22 national champions, 15 runners-up, 89 All-Americans, and 136 academic All-Americans.
