Founding and Early Years
The origins of the newspaper date back to 1869 with the establishment of The North Texan by Addison Harvey Boyd. The publication evolved when Austin Pollard Boyd, Addison's younger brother, acquired The North Texan and merged it with his own newspaper. This merger resulted in a daily publication known as the Paris Morning News, which Austin managed until his passing in 1902, after which his son, Sayers James Boyd, took over as editor and publisher.
Overcoming Adversity and Transition
The newspaper faced a significant crisis in 1916 when a devastating fire swept through downtown Paris. The blaze destroyed the newspaper's office and wiped out all historical records. Despite this setback, Sayers Boyd continued as publisher until April 1920, when he sold the business to the North Texas Publishing Company. This group consisted of local business leaders, and Harry Thomas Warner, a former managing editor of the Houston Post, was appointed as editor.
In 1929, the Harte-Hanks newspaper company acquired the Morning News as one of its earliest acquisitions. Under this new ownership, the publication schedule was modified, and the paper was renamed the Paris Evening News. By 1937, the name was simplified to its current title, The Paris News.
Ownership and Leadership Evolution
The paper changed hands several times in the latter half of the 20th century. Harte-Hanks sold the publication to Worrell Communications in 1986, and three years later, it was acquired by Southern Newspapers.
