Rudger and the World of Imaginaries: A Story of Creativity and Loss

Rudger and the World of Imaginaries: A Story of Creativity and Loss

In a world where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, Imaginaries—invisible entities conjured by the minds of children—exist as companions to those with vivid imaginations. The story follows Rudger, an Imaginary created by a young girl named Amanda Shuffleup. While their bond is strong, it is often misunderstood by the adult world, specifically by Amanda's mother, Lizzie, who views her daughter's fixation on an invisible friend as a sign of aloofness.

The Threat of the Imaginary Hunter

The stability of Rudger and Amanda's world is shattered when they encounter Mr. Bunting. Unlike ordinary adults, Bunting is a hunter and devourer of exceptional Imaginaries. Accompanied by his own sullen Imaginary, a girl dressed in black, Bunting targets Rudger for consumption. During a frantic attempt to escape Bunting's pursuit, a tragic accident occurs: Amanda is hit by a car and left in critical condition.

The Sanctuary of Forgotten Friends

For an Imaginary, the greatest threat is not just a hunter, but oblivion. Imaginaries cease to exist once their creator forgets them. As Amanda slips into a coma, Rudger begins to fade. He is guided by a mysterious cat named Zinzan to a sanctuary—a physical library where Imaginaries are sustained by the creative energies emanating from the books.

Within this sanctuary, Rudger meets a diverse community of displaced entities, including:

  • Cruncher-of-Bones: A skeletal companion.
  • Snowflake: A hippo.
  • Emily: A natural leader among the library's inhabitants.

Through Emily, Rudger learns the dark history of Mr. Bunting. Once a mortal man, Bunting became so desperate to prevent his own Imaginary from vanishing that he began consuming others to sustain them both for hundreds of years.

The Battle for Existence

Rudger attempts to reintegrate into the human world by spending time with John, one of Amanda's classmates. However, Bunting continues his hunt, eventually trapping Rudger, Emily, and Zinzan in a fabricated imaginary world. In a devastating turn, Bunting uses a pretend gun to kill Emily, causing her to be instantly forgotten by everyone in the library.

Determined to save Amanda, Rudger travels to the hospital. A climactic battle of imagination ensues between Amanda, who awakens from her coma, and Mr. Bunting. When Bunting creates a massive snake to crush Amanda, Lizzie is initially unable to help because she cannot see the creature. However, by recalling her own childhood Imaginary—a sheepdog named Fridge—Lizzie is able to intervene. Fridge incapacitates the snake and saves Rudger from Bunting's grasp.

The conflict ends when Bunting's own Imaginary, moved by the bond between Rudger and Amanda, chooses to be devoured instead. This act leads to the total disappearance of Mr. Bunting.
