Tools and Transcription Process

To make the system practical, Charles Barbier invented specialized tools. He developed a shelf ruler featuring groups of six horizontal grooves. Using a punch and a movable cursor for guidance, the writer would pierce the paper through these grooves.

Because the punch created relief on the reverse side of the paper, the resulting text was mirrored. Consequently, the writer had to write from right to left. The recipient would then run their fingers across the front of the paper, counting the dots in each row to deduce the corresponding phonetic sound.
