History and Industrial Heritage

The region's history is marked by extreme geological events and industrial ambition. On August 31, 1420, the area was struck by a mega-earthquake measuring between 8.8 and 9.4, the first major seismic event recorded in Chilean history. Later, in 1687, the English explorer Edward Davis reached Playa Bahia Inglesa.

The city was officially founded on September 23, 1850. Its growth was accelerated by the mining boom; in 1851, the first railway in Chile was inaugurated, connecting Caldera to Copiapó to facilitate the export of minerals.
