Burnie Race Route and Event History

The Burnie race offers a scenic course that takes participants through key landmarks of the region, combining urban stretches with coastal views. From its traditional physical layout to its adaptation during global challenges, the event has evolved to accommodate various distances and formats.

The Official Race Course

The race begins north of the intersection of Wilson and Cattley Streets. Participants head south along Wilson Street until they reach the Bass Highway. From there, the route turns east, passing the Burnie Yacht Club and Wivenhoe.

The course continues until it reaches the five-kilometer turning point. After reaching this mark, runners return along the same path, heading west back toward the start-finish line.

Event Evolution and Distance Options

To make the event more accessible to a wider range of athletes, a 5km event was introduced in 2015. This addition proved popular, with 489 participants taking part in the five-kilometer race. For those competing in this distance, the halfway point is located near the Emu River.

Adaptation During the Pandemic

In 2020, the event faced significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure safety while maintaining the spirit of the competition, the race was transitioned to a virtual format. Entrants were permitted to complete the race in their own time on either October 17 or 18.
