Operational History and Deployment

The first BIAS unit was installed on a Fairchild C-123B in April 1966 for the Special Air Warfare Center at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Initial testing for search and rescue, ground operations, and night strikes received positive feedback from both the USAF and the US Army.

Following this success, the Southeast Asia Operational Requirement (SEAOR) 50 was issued on June 6, 1966. While ten C-123s were originally planned for the upgrade, the program shifted to 11 Lockheed JC-130A aircraft, which were re-designated as RC-130S. However, only two of these aircraft were completed and deployed to South-East Asia.

In the field, the system encountered critical limitations. The aircraft were highly vulnerable to enemy anti-aircraft fire, and the BIAS was found to be less effective than the emerging AC-130 gunships, which provided their own offensive capabilities. The two RC-130S aircraft eventually returned to the United States and were de-modified by 1974.
